'Industry of mediocrity': Rookie teachers woefully unprepared, report says
Tue Jun 18, 2013
I didn't go into teaching, but I attended what was considered one of NY's top schools for Education Majors. I had a lot of interaction with students who wanted to go into teaching and it was sad. Some expected they'd be picked for Westchester County schools and have the easy life. Most spent their 4 …
Steven Spielberg: Big tickets, big budgets make film industry 'implosion' imminent
Fri Jun 14, 2013
And you're still paying $7 for matinees in some markets. Re film costs - I remember reading 10+ years ago about the disappointing returns on Disney's Treasure Planet. Out of the $140 million price tag about half was marketing/promotional tie-ins. That's crazy.
Is he a Super Square? Mild-mannered 'Man of Steel' must compete in an 'Iron Man' world
Thu Jun 13, 2013
"'Man of Steel' goes out of its way to try and change the character as much as it can, grounding him in a gritty here and now that's not always suitable to the character,"
Soy sauce overdose sends man into coma

With so many nice planets out there, why would aliens attack Earth?
Wed Jun 5, 2013
And don't forget, Earth has ~7 billion bipedal lifeforms that can be easily trained, are damned good at adapting to survive in a variety of environmental conditions, and are mostly omnivorous. If that's not a good slave labor pool.... Not to mention all the beasts of burden we've already handily dom …
When school's out for summer, many kids are at risk of going hungry
Fri Jun 7, 2013
Well said. I was on the reduced-price meals in school, but somehow I never went hungry in the summer. Prentending as if all of those kids are in danger is some of the most irresponsible journalism I've ever seen. My parents bought staple foods (contrary to the media's whining, they're CHEAPER than j …
Chinese wonder why their tourists behave so badly
Thu May 30, 2013
Go into a city's Chinatown and you'll see a lot of the same behaviors from the locals, especially the spitting. The inability to be discreet I've seen in a Vietnamese coworker as well. I asked her about it and she just shrugged, laughed, and said that was just the way it's done back in Vietnam. A lo …
Ad blunders: Hitler kettles are the least of them
Wed May 29, 2013
After staring at that tea kettle for an hour, I unfocused my eyes a bit and saw a seahorse. I think I'm doing something wrong --- my neighbors all saw a sailboat.
Cops: Man who killed couple, raped tot released early from prison hours before
Wed May 29, 2013
Additionally: He was first released on the Dillingham case on October 2, 2011, but violated probation and was sent back to prison two days later, according to records Schroeder released. Since then he has been in and out of prison after committing other probation violations, Schroeder said.
It's beer, it's lemonade, it's ... shandy! And it's coming to the US
Tue May 28, 2013
Love the Leinenkugel's Shandy. The Sam Adams Porch Rocker was really nice last year. I'm hoping it's just as good this year, I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

What do you think of the 'pink, princess' girl culture?
My 5 y.o. niece is big into the whole Princess thing after a brief stint of being obsessed w/ Hannah Montana and Dora. Each phase comes and goes. Through it all, she still likes to play w/ my old toy cars and dinosaurs. And she'll play w/ my old Ninja Turtle and superhero action figures that my pare …
